Toledo Blade: Political Pressure Cooker Heating Up Early for Ohio’s 2006 Races

By James Drew & Steve Eder

It’s only December, but political tension is rising.

Republican Auditor Betty Montgomery, who is running for governor, compares her two primary foes - J. Kenneth Blackwell and Jim Petro - to the “liberals at Reform Ohio Now” - the group behind four ballot issues that voters soundly rejected last month.

An aide to Mr. Blackwell, Ohio’s chief elections officer, says Mr. Petro’s big-dollar TV ad campaign is “not telling the truth about his record on abortion, gay rights, and taxes.”

Ohio: A Brown About Town

National Journal: The Hotline

Rep. Sherrod Brown (D-13) “kicked off” a 4-day statewide tour 12/2. At a 12/2 news conference in Columbus, Brown pledged to represent working Ohioans against the “greedy self-interest” of GOP one-party rule in OH and DC, who “see government simply as a profit center, a chance to reward their friends, punish their enemies, and shower money on themselves” (Smyth, Cleveland Plain Dealer, 12/3).

At a “formal campaign kickoff” 12/3 in Toledo’s Downtown Latte coffee shop, Brown “criticized” Sen. Mike DeWine (R) for following Pres. Bush and Gov. Bob Taft (R) “on every issue.” Brown also called ‘05 OH-02 nominee/Iraq War vet Paul Hackett (D) “inconsistent” on Iraq War criticism, a charge Hackett spokesperson Karl Frisch called “blatently not true.” Frisch: “The only thing consistent about Sherrod Brown’s 30 years of public service is that he’s been a career politician” (Tankersley, Toledo Blade, 11/4).

The Frontrunner

The Toledo Blade (12/3, Eder, Drew) reported that OH13 Rep. Sherrod Brown (D), kicking off his bid for U.S. Senate o Friday, ripped Ohio Sen. Mike DeWine (R), “saying he shares responsibility for the ‘ineptness’ and ‘incompetence’ in leadership in Washington and Columbus. ‘I will be critical of the Bush, Taft, DeWine team — critical of their incompetence, and their ineptness in the way they have taken the direction of the country,’ said Mr. Brown.” Brown “previewed his strategy against Mr. DeWine, painting him in the company of President Bush — whose popularity has fallen amid concerns about the Iraq war and the economy — and Gov. Bob Taft, whose administration has been gripped by scandal. ‘Instead of public servants, we have monied interests in Columbus and in Washington who see government simply as a profit center — simply a chance to reward their friends, punish their enemies, and to shower money on themselves,’ Mr. Brown said.” The Blade noted, “Asked if Mr. DeWine is corrupt, Mr. Brown said ‘no.’ But he said Mr. DeWine should be accountable for the ineffectiveness of government in Ohio over the past 15 years.” Brown “noted Ohio has lost more than 200,000 manufacturing jobs in five years. ‘I think Senator DeWine has been one of the two or three major Republican leaders in the state for a decade-and-a-half. I think Senator DeWine has been responsible for that Republican leadership team and the direction [it has] taken the state.’”

The Cleveland Plain Dealer (12/3, Smyth, 375K) added that Brown “all but dismissed his primary opponent for the seat, outspoken Iraq war veteran Paul Hackett, to focus on” DeWine. Hackett campaign spokesman Karl Frisch “said the Cincinnati attorney provides a clear contrast to Brown. ‘Voters are going to have a clear choice when they go into the ballot box between someone who has a fresh voice and a unique perspective on the direction he wants to lead the state, and more of the same,’ Frisch said.” Brown “railed against DeWine’s support of the war in Iraq, privatization of Social Security and the Central American Free Trade Agreement.”

Toledo Blade: Candidate Brown Challenges GOP Establishment

By Jim Tankersley

The room was packed, the lattes foamy, the coffee stamped “fair trade,” and the announcement as bold as a French roast.

Sherrod Brown ripped federal free-trade agreements, cheered workers’ rights, and lumped U.S. Sen. Mike DeWine (R., Ohio) with a pair of struggling Republican leaders - President Bush and Gov. Bob Taft - in a formal campaign kickoff at Toledo’s Downtown Latte yesterday.

The brief speech, and an earlier telephone interview with The Blade, brimmed with the sort of anti-Bush, anti-free-trade, anti-drug/insurance/oil/chemical-company rhetoric that has drawn Mr. Brown, a Democratic congressman from suburban Cleveland, admiration from labor unions and liberal bloggers - and leaves critics questioning whether he is too liberal for Ohio voters.

Columbus Dispatch: DeWine is Senate Hopeful’s Main Target

Brown concentrates on incumbent, not Democratic primary

By Jim Siegel

Democratic Congressman Sherrod Brown kicked off his campaign for the U.S. Senate yesterday, vowing to focus on the record of incumbent Mike DeWine and not his likely primary opponent.

“On the one hand, I will be critical of the Bush-Taft-DeWine team, critical of their incompetence and their ineptness in the way they’ve taken the direction of the country,” the seven-term U.S. representative from Avon told a group of Statehouse reporters. “On the other part of my campaign, I will boldly lay out specific answers to the problems I criticize.”

Brown, 53, has started a four-day statewide swing that includes stops in Toledo, Dayton, Cincinnati and his hometown of Mansfield.
