Congressional Quarterly Daily Monitor: Sanchez Sister Draws Support, Flak in Key Tuesday Primary
By Adam Graham-Silverman
The three leading contenders for the crucial Democratic nomination in California’s open 39th District appear ready to brawl right up to Tuesday’s primary vote.
The stakes are as high as the rhetoric level in the campaign: The primary almost certainly will determine who will serve the district in the 108th Congress. Drawn in redistricting by the Democratic-controlled legislature, the 39th has a Hispanic-majority constituency with strongly Democratic voting tendencies.
One of the Democratic hopefuls, former Orange County labor official Linda Sanchez, has benefited greatly from the support, local clout and fundraising skills of her sister, three-term California Democratic Rep. Loretta Sanchez.
